'To lose to us in the first round would be a catastrophe for them'

Dundalk have a hugely daunting task in the Champions League tomorrow night when they go head to head against BATE Borisov.

The Belarusian champions have reached the group stages of the competition with relative regularity and have beaten the likes of Bayern Munich and Athletic Bilbao over the last three years.

But that adds a pressure of its own as Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny suggested when he joined us on the line from Belarus' capital Minsk ahead of the first leg.

"They're thriving as a club. For them, if they weren't to reach the group stages of the Champions League as they did last season, it would be a disappointment. So to lose to us in the first round would be a catastrophe, really, for them," he said.

Kenny said he also hopes that they can take their good domestic form into the game and says he will not be parking the bus like BATE's domestic rivals often do.

"It's proven every week in Belarus that it doesn't work and that's not a form that we would employ," he said, although the league-winning manager says his team won't be naive.
