Arsene Wenger is expected to find out if he will remain as Arsenal manager at Tuesday's board meeting.
The manager won a record seventh FA Cup last weekend to put a gloss on an otherwise disappointing season, as Arsenal finished in fifth place, missing out of Champions League qualification.
While Wenger looks likely to stay on at the club, former captain Tony Adams hopes he moves on. Adams worked with Wenger and captained the side to two Premier League titles and two FA Cups.
Speaking to The Guardian, Adams admitted he thought the Frenchman was "essentially, is not a coach", despite being a "great" one earlier in his career.
"He’s not the best I’ve worked with. Don Howe taught me. Terry Burton taught me. Terry Venables taught me. George Graham taught me. They taught me how to defend, how to work lines, how to push up."
"Arsene’s a better physiologist than all of them. Better economist than all of them. I would say better psychologist than all of them. He is one of the greatest managers of all time."
The relationship between Wenger and Adams has soured in recent years, and reached its low-point when the now-Granada manager unsuccessfully applied for a job with one of Arsenal's youth teams.
"I’d been at the club 23 years and they treated me like that? It was a fucking disgrace. I wanted to say: "Arsene, I understand I’ve got no right to go back to Arsenal just because I played here. Tell me if I’m not good enough. But don’t tell me: 'You’re going to be the next Arsenal manager, I’ve got high hopes for you.'"
"I just said: 'Good luck for the season, Arsene. I’m not going to fall out with you. I love you lots.' I’ve got compassion for him as well. He’s been there 20 years and can’t keep everyone happy."
The duo worked together for six seasons at Highbury, winning four major trophies and cementing their spot as one of the best teams in England.
As Arsene Wenger prepares for one of the biggest days of his Arsenal tenure, he will hope the Arsenal board pay no attention to the words of Adams.
