Cristiano Ronaldo has a useful habit of punching holes into opposition defences with his astonishing goal record the best evidence of the Real Madrid forward's firepower.

However, this weekend the Ballon D'Or winner decided he would punch actual defenders against Cordoba:

His act of retribution got him a red card, but did not end up costing Real as Gareth Bale helped them to a 2-1 win to keep the world's richest club clear at the top of La Liga.

Over in Serie A, AC Milan defender Philippe Mexes has form for on-pitch violence. The fiery Frenchman let his struggling team-mates down in the 3-1 defeat to high-flying Lazio by grabbing the Biancocelesti captain Stefano Mauri by the throat - an act which unsurprisingly got him a red card:

Anderlecht midfielder Steven Defour (once linked with Manchester United a few years ago) suffered a lot more provocation before his red card in the Belgian Clasico against his former Standard Liege.

Standard's fans have not forgiven the Belgium international for deciding to line out in Anderlecht's purple and white colours and as a welcome present for the former FC Porto man, the ultras put up a huge banner featuring an image of his severed head.

Defour got two yellow cards for kicking the ball towards the Standard fans:

 While red cards grabbed the headlines, there were some goals scored in Europe this week.

There is no need to introduce Juventus prodigy Paul Pogba at this rate. The midfielder found the net with another stylish goal in a virtuoso performance against Chievo:
