Vincent Hogan: Parents can destroy the beauty of sport for children

Marie Crowe and Vincent Hogan were the guests for the Sunday Paper Review on Off the Ball this week.

While the majority of articles across the Sunday papers looked back at the key events over an eventful 2017 - one piece in particular stood out for Vincent Hogan.

"In the Sunday Independent today, all their writers, including Marie, are picking their moment of the year and Brendan Fanning - he does a brilliant left-field thing.

"He goes to St. Anne's public park and I know Brendan coaches rugby himself - he's big into the whole idea of coaching kids and he comes upon an under-11 match and he hears coaches shouting 'Make only big hits!' and this kind of stuff - 'take no prisoners' to under-11s - and think about that.

"And, he goes down to another part of St. Anne's and there's a soccer match going on. He reckons about under-11s as well and the coaches are saying nothing. And, the parents are saying nothing - there's no adult noises at all. The only sounds are the players talking to one another and it's poetry to just imagine that.

"I mean, my daughter plays Gaelic Football and I was at an under-13 final about a month ago - the game had to be actually stopped because one the parents on the opposing team was making such a show of himself and the referee had to stop the match.

"And you just think - parenting can destroy children. It can destroy the beauty of sport, the enjoyment of sport," he added.
