WATCH: Australian Rules club bans fan for throwing banana at indigenous player

An Australian Rules fan has been banned for throwing a banana at an indigenous player during an AFL match on Saturday.

Adelaide Football Club's Eddie Betts was in action against Port Adelaide when a supporter threw the banana in the player's direction after he scored, although a team-mate intercepted it.

The incident was caught on camera and the fan has been banned indefinitely after an investigation. She is also alleged to have called Betts a "monkey".

"As a result, the member has been banned indefinitely from attending any Port Adelaide games in the future," said Port Adelaide, adding that a racist motivation was clear.

They also said they would offer the woman a place in an Indigenous cultural awareness program.

It is not the first time that the issue of racism towards Indigenous players has been raised in Australian Rules, with the booing of former leading star Adam Goodes believed to be at least partly fueled by racism.

One of the most high-profile incidents involving Goodes came when a 13-year-old girl called him an "ape" during a game, with Goodes pointing her out to security before she was subsequently ejected.
