WATCH: Bill O'Herlihy's daughters share touching story that shows what a "gentleman" their father was

Last May, the Irish public were shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Bill O'Herlihy.

The Cork native led RTÉ's sports coverage through numerous football tournaments and Olympic Games, culminating in the 2014 World Cup. He began broadcasting in 1965, after a career as a journalist in Cork.

On Monday evening, RTÉ's Cloch Le Carn looked back on the life of O'Herlihy through his broadcasting and professional career in public relations. His two daughters, Sally and Jill, were interviewed during the show and one story told near the end of the programme showed how popular the 76-year-old really was.

Just hours before his death, O'Herlihy was at the Irish Film and Television Awards, where eight years previously he won the Television Personality of the Year. His daughter Sally spoke about how the taxi driver that drove O'Herlihy home that night came to the house to pay his respects just days later.

"This loveliest guy just said; 'I'm just here, I drove your dad home from the IFTAs, and I just couldn't believe it. He was the most lovely of gentlemen, and I just had to come and sympathise with you.' For us, I guess it was just a final testament to dad that he did have time for everyone, and did have an impact on people."

"For that taxi-man to come the door and share that story meant a lot to us."
