WATCH: Joey Chestnut breaks record in hot dog-eating contest

America's Independence Day carries many traditions, but on New York's Coney Island, July 4th means only one thing. Hot dogs.

The Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest pits competitive eaters against each other, with each given ten minutes to eat as many hot dogs as possible. What better way to celebrate the independence of your country than by having a quick ten minute lunch?

The contest was celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2016, and saw Joey Chestnut break the event record, eating 70 hot dogs in ten minutes. Chestnut lost his title last year after previously winning eight titles in a row. The winner each year receives the famous Mustard Belt.

In 2015, Chestnut lost to Matt Stonie last year eating 60 hot dogs to Stonie's 62. There was no doubt this year as the 32-year-old was the 70-53 victor this time around.

"Last year was rough," Chestnut told the crowd after the ten minute event. "This year was the best ever."  Although eating 70 hot dogs, he was still three short of the World Record he set last month at a qualifying event.

Chestnut earned $10,000 for winning the competition, but more importantly, he regained the title he lost last year. Sporting giants come in all shapes and sizes.
