WATCH: Liverpool v Man City becoming a modern classic

Liverpool and Manchester City haven't traditionally been the most bitter of rivals, with the latter's quiet-as-a-mouse neighbours being the the ones who most stir passions on the red half of Merseyside.

But since the emergence of the Sky Blues as a powerhouse in English football following their takeover by an Abu Dhabi group in 2008, the Liverpool-Man City fixture is developing into a bit of a modern classic.

Today on Off The Ball there will be live commentary from the latest instalment of this rivalry from 12 noon.

Last year was a vintage one in that respect, with two epic league encounters and Liverpool having the last laugh courtesy of this Phillippe Coutinho strike for an unlikely last winner on Merseyside last April.

It was a brilliant but curious double-header during season 2013/14 in that Coutinho's strike nailed a 3-2 victory on a raucous afternoon at Anfield as Liverpool chased down a title. It brought them three points when they really only deserved one, and if any team should have claimed the spoils - it was City.

The reverse was true in the first game at the Etihad - for us the game of the season - when City won 2-1 despite being ripped to shreds by a Liverpool side in the process of becoming the most exciting team in the country.

The hosts won out, but it was an unfortunate Simon Mignolet screw-up that gifted them the victory after Liverpool had blown a clatter of chances at the other end.

This season has been nowhere near the quality or drama of the previous one, with City's 3-1 victory back in August entertaining but nowhere near a classic...

Still, it's all a far cry from way-back-when when City were relegated by the Reds in perhaps the most infamous edition of the Liverpool-Manchester City fixture - on the last day of the 1995/'96 season.

It featured one of the great non-celebrations by Ian Rush (alas, not included in this video) when he put and a major miscommunication gaff which saw City settle for a 2-2 draw when they needed victory.

Our own Niall Quinn was a key man in trying to save to day but to no avail.

But perhaps City should have been grateful for the draw - it was a lot better than the reverse tie the previous October, when they were hit for six ... and unlikely scenario today, right?
