WATCH: New York midfielder may have piqued the FAI's interest after sublime winner

Tommy McNamara produced a sublime finish last night during New York City's clash at the Portland Timbers to move his side second in the MLS Eastern Conference.

The 25-year-old collected a pass from Andrea Pirlo and proceeded to bend his effort into the top corner to hand his side all three points.

"I have an Irish passport," he said in an interview with MLSSoccer.com, "I've had it for almost 10 years now. Someone from the FAI reached out and wanted to confirm whether I did have a passport or not.

"I think it’s an honour to represent the national team. Obviously I qualify for both and it would be an honour to represent either. I've always followed and supported the Irish national team as well as the US national team.

"I've watched almost every game for both national teams. I've followed and supported both national teams my entire life."

Martin O'Neill has named fellow MLS players in his 35-man squad for their upcoming friendlies in the form of Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy, 143/67) and  Kevin Doyle (Colorado Rapids, 62/14).

McNamara was born in New York but qualifies for dual citizenship, as his paternal grandfather was born in Ireland.
