Wexford Youths reach Premier Division for first ever time

Wexford Youths have won automatic promotion to the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division after a 3-0 win over Athlone Town.

Goals in the second-half from Danny Furlong, Eric Molloy and Aidan Keenan earned the Youths a comfortable win at Ferrycarrig Park that has secured the First Division title and a first ever promotion for the club which was founded in 2007.

Elsewhere tonight in the First Division, Cabinteely beat Cobh Ramblers 1-0 at home, while Shelbourne picked up a comfortable 3-0 victory at home to Waterford United.

In the Premier Division, Cork City missed out on a chance to eat into Dundalk's lead that the top of the Airtricity League Premier Division.

The Leesiders were held to a scoreless draw by Derry City tonight at Turners Cross and the single point means that Cork are now 10 behind Dundalk at the top of the table.

Elsewhere, third-placed Shamrock Rovers claimed a 2-0 win over Galway United at the Tallaght Stadium.

Goals in either half from Gavin Brennan and Danny North put the Hoops on course to shrink the gap between themselves and Cork in the battle for second spot.

In tonight's other game in the top-flight, Drogheda United and Bohemians played out a 2-2 draw at United Park.

There was a flurry of goals in the final eight minutes of the first-half as Bohs raced into a 2-0 lead only for Drogheda two score twice in a three-minute spell to draw level before the break.
