Where does Ireland's win over Germany rank among other great Irish sporting moments?

An unlikely Irish win and a stunning goal from Shane Long had the entire nation celebrating in unison as we marked another incredible Irish sporting achievement.

Already, it is one of those unique moments where fans will remember where they were when it happened, and hopefully will lead to even better times as Martin O'Neill's team look to qualify for the European Championships in 2016.

Throughout Ireland's sporting history, there have been some fantastic moments worth remembering, and that brought the entire nation to a halt, so here's a look back at the moments that stand out from the rest.

Ireland v Germany: Aviva Stadium, 2015

We'll start with the amazing scenes last night as Darren Randolph's long ball ended up at the feet of Shane Long, who made no mistake with his finish past Manuel Neuer.

Off The Ball's commentary team of Nathan Murphy and Stephen Hunt captured the mood pretty well, with an incredible air of excitement that can't help but make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

Wales v Ireland: Millennium Stadium, 2009

After a Stephen Jones drop goal flew between the posts with about five minutes to go, it looked as though Ireland's Grand Slam goose might have been cooked.

However, the team came back, regrouped and worked their way back into Wales' half of the pitch. With just moments left in the match, Peter Stringer got the ball out, fed it back to Ronan O'Gara, and the Munster man made no mistake.

Katie Taylor's Olympic gold: ExCeL Arena, 2012

It's rare that an Irish team or athlete goes into an event as the clear favourite, but that was the case for Katie Taylor at the Olympics in 2012.

That didn't make her achievement any less special however, as she won the gold in some style, evoking a strong emotional reaction from Seán Bán Breathnach as he commentated on the final.

The scenes of celebration were no less exuberant in her home town either.

England v Ireland:  M Chinnaswamy Stadium, 2011

Kevin O'Brien's performance where he scored 113 runs against England in 2011 was historic for two reasons: it was the fastest century at the World Cup off just 50 balls, and it gave Ireland a momentous win over England, shocking the cricket world.

The English did eventually manage to get O'Brien out, but it was too little too late, as Ireland needed just 11 runs from 11 balls to see out the result. Our own George Hook got pretty emotional discussing the famous victory on air, broadcasting live from Opera Lane in Cork.

Ireland v Romania: Stadio Luigi Ferraris, 1990

Well no list of Ireland's greatest sporting moments would be complete without a mention of Italia '90. The entire country shut down for most of the tournament, but the streets were empty and all the shops were closed for the penalty shootout against Romania.

There wasn't a house in the land that didn't have the TV or the radio on to be a part of Packie Bonner's famous save from Daniel Timofte, and David O'Leary's decisive penalty. "The nation holds its breath..."
