Who are the likely candidates to replace Tim Sherwood at Aston Villa?

With Tim Sherwood fired by Aston Villa on Sunday after slipping to six defeats on the bounce, there are a number of names in the frame to get the job.

Whether or not many of them want it is another matter, but a gig in the Premier League with some time to go before the January window might be an attractive one to some of these managers.

Remi Garde

The early favourite for the job, the former Lyon manager and Arsenal player is all of a sudden the favourite with the bookies to be named Sherwood's successor, with odds of 2/5. Garde left Lyon and has been working as a pundit for Canal + in France since, and they are one of the main sources putting his name forward for the job.

Garde won the Coupe de France during his time at Lyon, and he has previously been linked with the Newcastle job, but might be tempted to the Premier League by this opportunity at Villa.

Brendan Rodgers

Recently sacked by Liverpool, he was possibly eyeing up a job as a pundit before Sherwood's sacking on Sunday morning. The job at Villa might be a very tricky follow up gig for the former Anfield head honcho though, given his inability to organise Liverpool's defence and stop them conceding goals over his three years there, which might mean that he doesn't have the skills to keep a struggling team in the Premier League this season.

David Moyes

Moyes has been in Spain at Real Sociedad since he was sacked by Manchester United, and it might be difficult to tempt the Scot back to England to take on what looks to be a really difficult task of turning Villa's season around.

He has been under pressure after a couple of less than stellar results, but he's confident that he'll make it through this tough period. Besides he seems to be enjoying the local cuisine.

Nigel Pearson

He kept Leicester up by the skin of their teeth last season by inspiring his team to an amazing run of form, which would be just what the doctor ordered for Villa after so many losses in a row.

He has experience getting the best out of players who weren't fancies by other managers, and is the man who brought Vardy to Leicester too so could certainly work within the limited budget that would be available to him. He certainly wouldn't tolerate his players sticking their heads in the sand and avoiding their responsibilities either.

Roy Keane

He has worked with many of the players at Villa before when he was there under Lambert, and part of the reason that he was happy to take the assistant manager role with the Republic of Ireland was that he would be able to get back to a position where he would be the main man in charge. Odds range on this one, but he was about 10/1 earlier in the day, and has fallen back to 16/1, so looks like a more unlikely option.

Jurgen Klinsmann

A bit down the list with odds of about 16/1, but he is under increasing pressure in the US as a result of a number of disappointing results. Foremost among them was a recent loss to Mexico which means that his team will not be at next year's Confederations Cup.

That's not the biggest deal in the world, but it is a sign that perhaps the long-promised "process" or "system" that Klinsmann has been working on might not be coming to fruition as he had hoped. His odds have fallen throughout the day to about 20/1, and while things are not going his way at the moment, he's likely to feel that he's invested too much in the US team to abandon it now.

Dwight Yorke

Alright, we'll admit that at 50/1 Yorkey is very unlikely to get the gig, but he was quick to say that he wanted it as soon as the news broke on Sunday about Sherwood. However, we're not actually sure if he even has the coaching badges to do it but hey, it's on Twitter so it must be true.
