Who awaits Ireland in the Euro 2016 play offs?

Ireland's loss on Sunday night to Poland sent Martin O'Neill's side into the play offs next month with a place in Euro 2016 at stake. Ireland wont know their potential opponents until later tonight when the European Qualifiers conclude, but lets look at the teams that will be looking to join Ireland in those two legged clashes.

Group A

A draw for Turkey tonight at home to Iceland will see them take third place in Group A and reach the play offs. If Turkey were to lose in Konya, the Netherlands would have to beat Czech Republic in Amsterdam to finish in third place. As it stands, the Dutch will fail to make the 24 team European Championships.

Group B

Three teams could still reach the play offs from Group B tonight. A win for Bosnia and Herzegovina will be enough for them away to Cyprus to qualify for third place. Israel face Belgium in Brussels knowing a win will guarantee them third place if Bosnia and Herzegovina fail to defeat Cyprus. If both Cyprus and Belgium win, the Cypriots finish in third place.

Group C

Ukraine finished in third place after their 1-0 loss to Spain last night. They had to win the game to have any chance of qualifying automatically for Euro 2016.

Group E

Slovenia reached the play offs last night after they defeated San Marino 2-0. They finished behind England and Switzerland in Group E.

Group F

Hungary finished third behind Northern Ireland and Romania in Group D. They may still qualify automatically at the best third placed team provided results in the other groups go their way.

Group G

Sweden finished in third place in Group G after defeating Moldova 2-0 last night in Group G. They had a chance to qualify automatically if Russia lost last night, but a 2-0 win over Montenegro in Moscow was enough to send Sweden to the play offs.

Group H

Norway and Croatia are battling it out to finish in second place behind Italy. Norway are two points ahead of Croatia in Group H and they need to defeat Italy in Rome tonight to guarantee qualification. Croatia are away to Malta knowing a win will send Norway to the play offs, if they fail to defeat Italy.

Group I

Denmark finished third on Sunday night in Group I after Albania defeated Armenia 3-0. Morten Olsen's side were the first team to reach the play offs.

The Best Third Place Team

As the European Championship expands to 24 teams, it has become easier to qualify for the tournament and the best third place team will take their place in France next summer by by-passing the play offs. At the moment, Group F's Hungary are in the best position to take that place. Only Turkey can leapfrog Hungary to that prize. The Turks need to defeat Iceland tonight and hope Kazakhstan defeat Latvia in Riga. If either of those scenarios fail to happen, Hungary can book their flights to France.
