Why is everyone talking about Ronda Rousey at the moment?

Ronda Rousey has become a phenomenon in the UFC, so much so that her star is on the rise at an incredibly rapid rate outside the octagon too.

This weekend at UFC 190, she ended her fight against Bethe Correia, her Brazilian opponent, in just 34 seconds. While that might sound incredibly quick, it was in fact quite a long fight, in comparison to her previous two: she beat Cat Zingano in 14 seconds, and knocked out Alexis Davis in 16 seconds.

Unsurprisingly, she is known as the dominant force in women's mixed martial arts, and her recent win confirmed that, as she moved to 12-0 in the UFC. What makes her so interesting is perhaps her position as an outlier, as described by fivethiryeight.com in a recent study of the statistics behind her fights. While fights in the UFC are generally getting longer, Rousey's are not, and every time she's asked a question, she proves she's up to the test.

Her performances have got people talking, and that comes with its own attention, something which she's clearly taking in her stride at the moment. She recently had a cameo role in the Entourage movie where she played herself, and is quickly displaying that she's a master of self-promotion.

After claiming the Best Fighter award at the ESPYs, she wasn't afraid to call out Floyd Mayweather, making reference both to his history of domestic violence and a previous incident in which the boxer had been asked about the possibility of against Rousey, and Floyd claimed that he'd "never heard of him".

Earlier this week, she also spoke about the people who have told her that her body is "masculine" and in general about being body shamed, sending an empowering message about having confidence in yourself.

All in all, Rousey's rise shows no signs of stopping, so don't be surprised to be hearing and seeing a lot more of her from here on out.
