William McGirt picks up maiden PGA Tour win of his 12-year career

PGA journeyman William McGirt celebrated his first win on the tour in his 12-year career last night at The Memorial in Muirfield Village Golf Club.

The 36-year-old produced back-to-back par saves during a play-off with Jon Curran and the tournament welcomed a first-time winner of the event for a third consecutive year.

"It was a hard day," McGirt told Golf Digest, "I've always been one to kind of keep my head down and do what I do. My wife [Sarah] can tell you that. I would practice hours and hours and hours. I would do whatever it took to get here.

"It's just been years and years of practice and getting your nose bloodied and learning from it."

The victory earns him three-year PGA Tour exemption and a booked his spot at the US Open in Oakmont in two week's time.

Rory McIlroy finished his final round with a 68 to lead a group sharing fourth on 13-under-par. He was joined alongside JB Holmes, Gary Woodland and Matt Kuchar.

Jason Day and Jordan Spieth finished further back on tied for 27th and 57th respectively.
