Is Patrick Mahomes the Michael Jordan of the NFL? | The Snap

There was a lot of love for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes on this week's edition of The Snap, with his time in Kansas City extended further.

The 24-year-old Texan was the No. 10 overall pick from the 2017 NFL Draft, and the franchise have now exercised their fifth-year option to keep a hold of him.

Ger Gilroy, Cian Fahey and Ronan Mullen discussed Mahomes' incredible talent on today's show, after he led his side to a Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers earlier this year.

Ger floated the idea that he is on the road to a level of greatness in the NFL that we may not have seen before.

"Is there a possibility that Patrick Mahomes bestrides the NFL like Michael Jordan [in the NBA]? That he's that level of a talent, that we're watching now him having overcome so early in his career that mountain that it took Jordan six years to get to?

"That this is the beginning of something that we haven't seen before. Because it feels to me that he is as good as anything that the sport has ever had.

"It's a combination, this kind of weird prescient combination of the best running QB as you need to be, all the skill-set Tom Brady and Joe Montana had, but combined in a way that not even Lamar [Jackson] has."

Cian agreed on Mahomes' undeniable talent, but said in American football it's much tougher to nail down one true icon like it is in basketball.

"That's the difficulty of the NFL, some people will say Jerry Rice, everyone will say Tom Brady, other people will say Joe Montana, and the NFL has so many players.

"They're also a lot of the time faceless players, they don't become brands the way Jordan and LeBron have become brands, so the reason I would think that's very difficult is - that's the way football works.

"There's a lot more argument, there's a lot less individual. I think the way I would put this... I don't disagree with you that Mahomes is capable of that, but he's coming off a quarterback era that is considered the best era for quarterbacks ever.

"[You have] Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers - there's four guys straight away off the top who are all incredibly good. You had Jordan from the previous era who LeBron had to catch, and that was pretty much it!"
