Liverpool have got Firmino, but 'their priority still is Benteke'

Liverpool have not waited long in their attempts to try and right the wrongs of last season.

Already James Milner, Danny Ings, goalkeeper Adam Bogdan and youngster Joe Gomez have been added.

And today, it was confirmed that the Reds have agreed a deal to bring Hoffenheim's Brazilian international Roberto Firmino to Anfield to the tune of almost £30M.

But there is even more to come according to The Times' Merseyside correspondent Tony Barrett, especially if they get £50M plus money in for Raheem Sterling.

"[Benteke] is 100 per cent a possibility. You've got to go back to when Liverpool were interested in Memphis Depay and there's a lot of suggestions at the time that Liverpool were beaten to Depay by Manchester United. What actually happened - and PSV pretty much confirmed this - Liverpool went cold on the deal. And the reason Liverpool went cold on the deal because they'd had the medical prognosis for Daniel Sturridge which said he could be out for three or four months until October," he said on Off The Ball tonight.

"Liverpool's priority then became a No 9 because they didn't have a backup to cover for Sturridge, which Depay of course isn't. The fact that they've now signed Firmino who isn't a No 9 tells you that their priority remains a No 9. But this is an addition to that. Firmino is an additional signing - one that they possibly wouldn't have made if it wasn't so clear that Raheem Sterling was going. Their priority still is Christian Benteke and I know that the Sterling money would make people think that maybe they'll pay the extra fee for Benteke."

On Firmino, he believes that it fits into Brendan Rodgers' designs on establishing a 4-3-3.

"If you look at the kind of players he has available now, 4-3-3 does become more attainable. If you look at the midfield three which as things stand would be Emre Can, Jordan Henderson and James Milner. And then you've got your attacking three of Daniel Sturridge, and/or Christian Benteke - should he arrive - and you've got Firmino, Coutinho and those kinds of players. You do see the potential for a 4-3-3," said Barrett, who also added that the players most concerned should be Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic.
