'People in my industry in particular were critical of Brendan Rodgers'

"I understood the situation. My experience at Reading told me that. That’s what I learned from my sacking there. I went in to Reading with the full backing of the chairman, who was great to me, and I got 20 games. Even though it was a three-year project and they wanted me there and I was the guy who knew the club more than anyone, I got the sack after 20 games."

With Liverpool in flying form, Brendan Rodgers can afford to be honest about the fact that he did have some fears for his position during the poor run at the start of the campaign.

But the Reds manager has also been open about talking tactically to the media, which has led to criticism according to Tony Barrett of The Times, who joined us on the line from Anfield ahead of Liverpool's match against Burnley.

"When he first became Liverpool manager, Rodgers got a lot of criticism for speaking tactically and speaking openly. It's because there aren't many managers of that type. People in my industry in particular were critical of Brendan Rodgers," said the Merseyside correspondent.

"I always thought that was a mistake because the one thing we do crave more than anything in the media and as football fans, is people who speak honestly and openly and Brendan Rodgers is one of the ones who does do that."

Barrett also praised the structure of the team for allowing the individual talents in the squad to begin blossoming.

He also expects Daniel Sturridge to eventually return as starting striker on a consistent basis when he is fully fit.
