Bale's free-kick exploits could see him usurp Ronaldo's set-piece rule

Euro 2016 was supposed to be the tournament when Europe's less heralded nations had a real chance of qualifying.

But one of the continent's traditional powers better be careful that they do not miss out entirely.

Netherlands are third in their group, well behind Czech Republic and Iceland, and would have slipped down to fourth if it was not for a Wesley Sneijder stoppage time equaliser against chasing Turkey.

The ineptitude of the Oranje's recent form has already attracted the wrath of Dutch legend Johan Cruyff and as Off The Ball European football reviewer Ben Lyttleton said tonight, veteran manager Guus Hiddink might get the sack sooner rather than later.

"He's under massive pressure. The only thing that's stopping him from that is that there's no obvious replacement for him because Ronald Koeman is doing so well. If Koeman wasn't in work, then it might be a different story. Some of Hiddink's choices have been strange."

Ben also noted the response in Spain to Gareth Bale's heroics as he helped Wales closer to Euro 2016 by scoring twice in a 3-0 win in Israel on Saturday.

One of those was a delightful free-kick and Ben thinks it could influence the direct set-piece pecking order when he returns to Real Madrid.

"I just wonder if the guys in Madrid will have spotted that and Bale might get the nod ahead of Ronaldo in the free-kick pecking order because Ronaldo has now taken 54 direct free-kicks since his last goal from a set-piece."

Plus Ben gave his take on England, who saw Harry Kane score on his debut against Lithuania and seem to be coasting towards Euro 2016.
