Hijackers of Libyan plane surrender in Malta

The Maltese prime minister has announced that hijackers who diverted an internal Libyan flight and landed in the Mediterranean country have surrendered.

Earlier the hijackers allowed 109 passengers to walk off the Afriqiyah Airways flight in Malta - followed shortly later by a number of crew members.

The prime minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat took to social media to confirm the stand-off was at an end.

UN demands end to Israeli settlement building

The UN Security Council has passed a resolution demanding an end to Israel's settlement building on occupied territory.

Defying pressure from US President-elect Donald Trump, The Obama administration decided to abstain from the vote, facilitating the decision.

US ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power told the Security Council that the US believes the settlements erode prospects for peace and stability in the region and said this position is longstanding.

She said: "The US has been sending the message that the settlements must stop, privately and publicly, for nearly five decades."

And she added: "Our vote today is fully in line with the bi-partisan history of how American presidents have approached both the issue and the role of this body."

Germany to speed up deportations of failed asylum seekers

Germany's chancellor has said she will “greatly strengthen” security in the country after the Berlin Christmas market attack in which 12 people died.

The main suspect in the attack - Anis Amri was shot dead by police in Milan in the early hours of this morning.

Earlier this week, German officials admitted that Amri had been under surveillance for several months this year prior to the attack.

Carrie Fisher reportedly 'suffers massive heart attack' on flight

Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher has suffered a massive heart attack on a flight from London to LA, according to US media reports.

TMZ is reporting that doctors who happened to be on board performed life-saving CPR on the 60-year-old star, who is best-known for playing Princess Leia in Star Wars.

The website said the emergency occurred 15 minutes before the plane landed in LA

 

 

First-half blitz sees Ulster cruise past Connacht

Paddy Jackson's impeccable place kicking helped ensure Ulster ran out comfortable 23-7 winners over champions Connacht in the Guinness PRO12 championship this evening.

Jackson nailed three penalties and two conversions to see the Irish province go into their clash with Leinster on New Year's Eve in the best possible position.

Stuart McCloskey and Clive Ross crossed for the home side on Friday evening, with Jack Carty the only scorer for the visitors.
