Morning Bulletin: Headlines from the sports desk

RUGBY

The IRFU have confirmed they've opened talks with Ireland coach Joe Schmidt about an extension to his current contract.
 
Cheif Executive Philip Browne says they're in discussions and they will come to "some sort of conclusion" in the next few months.
 
Schmidt has won two Six Nations titles in row with Ireland, his current contract runs until the end of next season. 

 

GOLF 

Peter Lawrie and Kevin Phelan are best of the Irish so far at the Shenzen International in China, both are level par in the early stages of their rounds.
 
Damien McGrane ended 1 over while Michael Hoey finished 2 over.
 
Peter Uihlein and Byeong Hun An share a 1 shot clubhouse lead on 5 under after rounds of 67.
 

SOCCER

Porto's status as Champions League dark horses was underlined last night, with a 3-1 first leg win over Bayern Munich in the quarter finals. 

While Luis Suarez struck twice, as Barcelona beat Paris Saint Germain 3-1 at the Parc des Princes. 
 
The second legs of those games come on Tuesday
 
Watford secured at least a play-off place in the Championship, with a 3-1 win away to Nottingham Forest last night. 
 
While Fulham and Rotherham drew one-each at Craven Cottage.
 
Celtic moved a step closer to the Scottish Premiership title last night.
 
They're now eight points clear at the top after beating Kilmarnock 4-1. 
 
Leigh Griffiths got a hat-trick.
 
Tonight sees the first legs of the Europa League quarter finals
 
Defending champions Sevilla  play host to Zenit St. Petersburg, 
 
Rafa Benitez's Napoli travel to Wolfsburg, Dynamo Kiev take on Fiorentina, while Club Brugge face Ukrainian side Dnipro. 
 
All of those games have 8.05 starts. 
 

GAELIC GAMES

Jack O'Connor's Kerry Minor footballers got the defence of their title underway with a comfortable 0-14 to 0-3 win over Clare in Tralee. 

They'll play Cork in the last four, after the young Rebels ran out 2-15 to 2-7 winners over Limerick. 
 
While Tipperary won through to the semis with a 2-16 to 1-7 win over Waterford. 
 
Limerick face Waterford in Necastlewest next Wednesday, for the right to take on Clare in the second play-off. 
 

SNOOKER

Fergal O'Brien has missed out on reaching the first round of the World Snooker Championships.
 
The Dubliner lost a final frame decider against Kurt Maflin last night, losing by ten frames to nine.
 
The draw for the first round takes place later this morning in Sheffield.

 

HORSE RACING

There's action at Limerick again today, where the first is off at 2.15.
