SOCCER

Goals in either half from Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen gave Liverpool a 2-0 win over a lack lustre Newcastle at Anfield last night

The win moves the Reds up to fifth just four points behind Manchester City who are fourth.

After the win, Brendan Rodgers said he will ask Sterling to explain himself after apparently being filmed inhaling laughing gas.

Footage appears to show the England international taking legal high nitrous oxide - and then passing out.

Meanwhile, Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is being linked with Manchester City.

According to the Star, Manuel Pellegrini will be sacked in the summer and former Chelsea boss Benitez is being lined up to replace him. 

Tonight, there's a repeat of last year's final in the first of the week's Champions League quarter finals.

Champions Real Madrid make the short journey across the Spanish capital to the Vicente Calderon to face neighbours Atletico.

Tonight's other game sees Juventus begin their quest to reach a first Champions League semi final since 2003, when they take on Monaco in their first leg in Turin.

Both of those games kick off at 7.45.

HURLING

It's reported that Nicky O'Connell has returned to the Clare panel.

According to the Irish Independent, O'Connell apologised to the squad and was welcomed back by manager Davy Fitzgerald and the players.

O’Connell and Davy O'Halloran left the squad last month with O'Halloran claiming in a newspaper interview that he and O'Connell were punished for a breach of rules while a senior player wasn't for a similar offence.

The accusation was denied by management while players released a statement in which they outlined their unity.

The Banner open their Championship campaign against Limerick on May 24th.

GOLF 

World number 14 Patrick Reed has confirmed he will play in the Irish Open at Royal County Down, next month.

Reed was one of the stars of last year's Ryder Cup in Scotland. It will be his first appearance at the Irish Open.
