Off the Bench - Newstalk's new Women's Sport Podcast

This is a podcast about women in sport but not exclusively for them.

We've called it Off the Bench because we feel that for too long female athletes have been reduced to the roles of benchwarmers by most of the media.

Too often, women are given cameo roles, even when they excel. They're just not given their fair share in terms of media coverage.

We hope Off the Bench will start to address the balance and that men and women, boys and girls, young and old and anyone who enjoys stories about dedicated athletes pushing themselves to the limit will enjoy what follows.

This month, presenter Cliona Foley speaks to Catríona Jennings, the woman who wouldn't quit. In 2012, she finished last in the London Olympic marathon and subsequently struggled with the psychological affects of that loss and a pretty serious injury.

Our panel of Catherina McKiernan, the marathon record holder for Ireland, Dick Hooper, former long distance runner and Mary Cullen, Irish long-distance runner who specializes in the 3000 metres and 5000 metres, discuss the future of marathon running in Ireland and why so many cannot touch Catherina's record.

We will also look at a game changer, Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon.

The team who put the podcast together are Cliona Foley, sports journalist, Sue Murphy, Digital News Editor for Newstalk and Sinéad Farrell, digital journalist.
