The Final Whistle: From Barcelona drama to boxing progress, catch up on today's sport

BOXING

Four Irish boxers have now progressed to the quarter-finals of the European Championships in Bulgaria.

Joe Ward and Adam Nolan have both won their last-16 contests today to join Michael Conlan and Dean Walsh in tomorrow's quarter-finals.

Conlan will be the first of the Irish fighters to step into the ring tomorrow when he takes on Frederik Jensen of Denmark at around 1.30pm, Irish time.

RUGBY

Ulster hooker Rob Herring and Leinster centre Noel Reid are the first two players to be released from the Ireland training camp and have been allowed to return to their provinces.

Marty Moore and Luke Fitzgerald have both returned to full contact training and are available for selection for this weekend's game against Scotland, while Andrew Trimble will undergo a further scan tomorrow to try and establish the extent of his foot injury.

Meanwhile, Paul O'Connell has been named as the Rugby Writers of Ireland Player of the Year at the annual awards ceremony tonight at the Guinness Storehouse.

The Ireland captain was rewarded for his outstanding performances during this year's Six Nations when he led his side to back-to-back titles.

The Irish team also picked-up the Dave Guiney Team of the Year prize, while Sophie Spence was named as the Women's Player of the Year.

ATHLETICS

The IAAF has begun retrospective action against 28 athletes after samples from the 2005 and 2007 world championships were re-tested.

The world athletics governing body says that the re-analysis of the samples had begun "well before" the recent allegations that they had allowed athletes with suspicious blood levels to continue competing.

It's believed that just six of the 28 athletes in question are still competing - but none of them will be in action at this month's world championships in Beijing.

SOCCER

Barcelona have won a dramatic all-Spanish UEFA Super Cup final in Tbilisi 5-4 after extra-time.

Sevilla came from 4-1 down to be tied 4-4 against Barcelona, who had recovered from conceding after just three minutes to take control of the tie.

But Manchester United target Pedro popped up in the second half of extra-time to secure victory.
