What has happened to RG3?

The start of the NFL season is just over a week away and one of the stars of the league is making all the headlines despite not featuring in the opening week.

Robert Griffin III, not Tom Brady is the NFL star in the news over the past week for missing the first game of the season. Washington's head coach Jay Gruden at the weekend that RG3 will not be starting and Kirk Cousins will be the starter "for 2015, moving forward".

Griffin was even on the pre printed tickets for the game against Miami Dolphins and now wont even feature.

The Washington Post's Dan Steinberg spoke to Off the Ball last night about the scenario involving Griffin and his now apparant successor Cousins.

Griffin joined the Washington team in 2012 after trading three first round trades to St Louis Rams to acquire his services. The 25 year old has been plagued by injuries in recent years in Washington and broke his ankle last year which meant he missed most of the season.

The new head coach Gruden joined the side at the end of last season, and quickly announced that Griffin was to be the sides quarter back. He quickly reneged and decided their was to be a competition between the two players.

In a pre season game against the Detroit Lions, Griffin was injured and since then reports have suggested that Gruden left Griffin in the game despite getting hit from the Lions defense. Steinberg thinks Griffin was left in the game, so Gruden could show the owners that the quarterback was not at a high enough level to start the season.

When asked if Griffin will play in Washington again, Steinberg told Off the Ball, "It would make the most sense for both sides if they could find a way to part peacefully and let Griffin get a different chance somewhere else"
