Sean Dyche talks Brady and Hendrick's Burnley form, "gaffer's day" and Kevin Long

Given the number of Irish internationals at Burnley, there is always plenty of interest in the club.

And a squad featuring Jon Walters, Robbie Brady, Jeff Hendrick, Stephen Ward and Kevin Long are in a solid position in the Premier League table, sitting ninth after six games, including a draw at Liverpool and beating champions Chelsea on the opening day.

Up next is a trip to an uncertain Everton on Sunday and ahead of that, Nathan caught up with manager Burnley Sean Dyche.

The form of Ireland pair Brady and Hendrick is something of major interest, with both childhood St Kevin's Boys team-mates moving to Burnley in consecutive windows last season - Hendrick in the summer, followed by Brady in January.

"Jeff grew into the season last season and ended up having a very good season and Robbie was different. He's moved around. He's come from a family base down in Norwich back up to Manchester and all the complications that come with that. It's taken him a little bit longer just to find his feet and get used to how we work but he came in pre-season very motivated, very fit physically and he's delivering good performances," said Dyche.

"They've done terrifically well for us."

Kevin Long has made three Premier League appearances this season as he begins to appear more regularly in Ireland squads.

"His self-motivation is fantastic. He proved that last season when he came in right at the end of the season, the way he looked after himself and the way he applied all the detail in training," said Dyche of the Cork-born defender.

"In view of now, he's sitting on the bench, he's one moment away from playing and if you look at James Tarkowski, he had to work for 18 months behind the scenes because of the form of Michael Keane and Ben Mee. But guess what, when he's got his chance, he's ready to deliver. So that's another clear sign for Kevin Long. Keep yourself right because when your time comes, you will be ready to deliver."

He also praised Ireland left back Stephen Ward for his role as an "immaculate professional", having established himself as a key figure at the club.

Recently, Belgian midfielder Steven Defour had revealed that a "gaffer's day" had helped him turn his fortunes around in pre-season. Dyche told us what was meant by that.

"Gaffer's day basically, there's a couple of days that I do. It's not about sports science, it's about mentality to do the work that's on offer," he said.

"We then reflect on it and actually show the players the GPS stats which basically is a really hard day which I've done for many years. It actually, more or less, represents a very high level Premier League football match. It's just that the players don't know that until afterwards when you reflect on it via the GPS so there is a bit more method to it than what it sounds because gaffer's day always implies this imaginary picture that they're just getting flogged to bits. They don't get that. There's a lot of sense to it and a lot of planning to it."
