Danish Superliga announces bumper weekend as football resumes in May

Denmark's Superliga is back with a bang this month as the League Association revealed plans to play matches on four days across one weekend.

The Superliga has been shut down for two months due to the coronavirus pandemic but life in the country is starting to get back on track.

On 12 March Denmark, along with Norway, became one of the first European countries to go into lockdown and closed its schools and borders.

Today it entered a second phase easing lockdown restrictions with shops allowed to reopen but restaurants, cafés and school classes from sixth to tenth grades will open a week later.

In an official statement the League Association announced that Superliga action will get back underway on Thursday 28 May with a postponed match (k/o 18:00) from round 21 between third-placed AGF Aarhus and Randers, who are seventh.

All matches will be played behind closed doors and the aim is to end the season by the end of July.

The statement reads: "As long as it is not possible to play with the spectators at the stadium, the times of the match have changed so that as many matches as possible are made available to football fans as much as possible.

"It is expected that the final regular round will be held on Sunday, July 26 and the season will end on Wednesday the 29th with the Europa playoff final.

"As the final organization of the remaining matches in the European tournaments is yet to be determined, minor changes to the schedule may occur."

On Friday 29 May they begin round 25 with bottom-of-the-table Silkeborg IF hosting FC Nordsjælland before Esbjerg fB take on Aalborg BK on Sunday 31 May.

On Monday 1 June there will be four matches, each kicking off at different times before the final match of the round on the Tuesday;

Superliga Round 25:

Friday, May 29, 18:00, Silkeborg IF - FC Nordsjælland

Sunday, May 31st, 17:00, Esbjerg fB - AaB

Monday, June 1, 13:00, Randers FC - Hobro IK

Monday, June 1, 15:00, FC Midtjylland - AC Horsens

Monday, June 1, 17:00, Lyngby BK - FC Copenhagen

Monday, June 1, 19:00, AGF - OB

Tuesday, June 2, 18:00, Brøndby IF - SønderjyskE

FC Midtjylland currently lead the title race with a twelve point lead at the top, ahead of reigning champions FC Copenhagen.

The director of the League Association, Claus Thomsen, commented: "We are really looking forward to delivering 3F Super League to Denmark again.

"We open with a bang of a local settlement, after which we enter the league's absolute most intense period with the decision of the base game over two rounds.

"Round 26 is usually one of the most dramatic sports days in Denmark with all matches at the same time."

The news comes after the German football league announced the return of the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 this weekend.
