'Unfortunately for everybody the game was stopped a few moments later'

Former Republic of Ireland striker David Kelly struck gold nine times in the green shirt during a 26-cap career.

But the most famous goal will always be the one against England in a 1995 friendly.

Of course, as we all know, the reason it sticks to mind is because it was the only goal scored in that match before all hell broke loose in the stands at Landsdowne Road.

That game was the fourth part of our Ford Sporting Moments series on the Ireland v England soccer rivalry and Kelly was kind enough to join us on Off The Ball to share his memories of an abandoned match that has gone in history for the wrong reasons.

"I was so chuffed, I was so pleased. I was just really pleased that [Jack Charlton] had given me the opportunity to play," said the Birmingham-born striker about starting up front alongside Niall Quinn who "he tended to do well together" with.

"We'd started the game really well and I'd had a couple of opportunities to score before and I was a little bit disappointed with the second opportunity in particular when I snatched at it and pulled it slightly wide of [David] Seaman's right hand side and for us to score and go in front deservedly was a really big thing," said Kelly.

"Jack was renowned for getting the ball forward really quickly and England were on the attack and Terry Phelan, bless him, ends up with the ball in the left-back area and played it forward out wide into John Sheridan, who was a marvelous passer of the football and he just slipped me down the side of the centre-half and a left-foot strike across the goal. I was really pleased that it went in. Unfortunately for everybody the game was stopped a few moments later."

Kelly also looked spoke to Ger about his brief spell at Derry City in 2002 as well as his progression to an assistant manager's role at Scunthorpe United.
