DeChambeau leads into the weekend at the WGC Mexico Championship

Bryson DeChambeau has a one-shot lead at 11-under-par at the half-way point of golf's WGC Mexico Championship.

He carded a second-round 63 in Mexico City with a remarkable 143 feet in putts.

“It was a lot of fun,” The American said of his round. “Making those putts the way I did, striking the ball the way I did, it’s surely a joy out there.

“The confidence has got to be high. It is high and it’s a lot of fun to see putts finally going in. Overall everything is going pretty well, firing on all cylinders.”

South Africa's Erik van Rooyen is right on DeChambeau's coattails after shooting a joint course record 62 on the occasion of his 30th birthday:

"The first thing I told my wife this morning: 'man, I feel really old'," he told the European Tour website.

"But I guess I'm still quite young and what a way to kick off the 30th and shoot nine-under. A little bit of a gift to myself.

"Retief (Goosen, previous sole course record holder) is obviously someone I've always looked up to, watched him win his Majors and win a lot of really nice events when I was a kid, so it's good to be in that category.

Rory McIlroy is eight-under into today's third round with Open champion Shane Lowry one-under and Graeme McDowell eight-over.

“There’s a long way to go,” world-number one McIlroy said of trailing by three shots.

“I just stayed patient and try to bide my time and made a couple of nice putts coming in, and I guess my patience was rewarded a little bit.”
