'We deserved to win' | Mourinho on Tottenham's goalless draw with Watford

Jose Mourinho has stated that Tottenham deserved to win in their 0-0 draw with Watford at Vicarage Road.

The Spurs manager was speaking to BT Sport after the game and said he was satisfied with his side’s performance, despite being unable to beat 17th-placed Watford.

“In the second half, I think the game was more 50:50. There was not as much dominance as there was in the first half. We tried.

“We tried with the ammunition that we have. We tried in the last period to bring energy, to bring more depth from midfield.

“We had more vision and more quality from Eriksen and as you said, we were two millimetres from winning the match. Overall, I think it was a good match.

“There are various decisions but I live for you, I live for the pundits, I live for the referee’s specialists who do. I prefer not to speak more than what I did,” Mourinho said.

Tottenham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga was crucial in rescuing a point for the away side after saving Troy Deeney’s penalty attempt.

The Portuguese manager was happy for his keeper who has stepped up to the plate in the absence of Hugo Lloris.

“He did his job for us and today of course was an important save. I think we deserved to win this match.

“To lose would be too much of a punishment for the boys. So I think they did good work,” Mourinho said.

Spurs are without their star striker Harry Kane but Mourinho remained coy on the possibility of signing a striker in the transfer window.

“The window is open. It can happen, it may not happen. For me, the important thing is again the so many positive things from the team and a good competitive attitude.

Overall the ‘Special One’ seemed pleased with his team’s performance, citing a lack of defensive players for their tactics today.

“We arrived here and he played without a part of the back four. We played without one single defensive player. Winks, you could say is a links player. After that Dele Alli’s an offensive player, Lo Celso is, Lamela, Lucas, Son.

“No strikers but no defensive players. So we tried to go in the direction of control. Control the possession, play behind them, play in between the lines. Overload some areas where we have players with quality.

“We had so many, I don’t want to say clear situations, but I saw so many opportunities to create goal situations in the last third,” Mourinho commented.
