Eriksen back in form as Denmark score six ahead of Ireland challenge

Denmark have warmed up for Monday night's crucial match at the Aviva Stadium in perfect fashion with a 6-0 win over Gibraltar.

Ireland take on Denmark at 7:45 on Monday with both sides knowing a positive result will equal qualification for next summer's European Championships.

For Ireland, only a win will do while Denmark can draw on the night and still progress to the tournament.

The Danes were always certain to beat minnows of the group Gibraltar, but many in the Irish camp would have been hoping for it to be more of a struggle than the 6-0 win.

Gibraltar are a bad case study in what to expect from Denmark come Monday, but bear in mind Ireland beat the small nation just 2-0 at home and 1-0 away. In contrast, Denmark won 6-0 both home and away.

Denmark went into half-time just 1-0 up but scored five after the break as Gibraltar's defensive work crumbled.

Most worrying for Mick McCarthy's side will be Christian Eriksen's apparent return to form with the playmaker scoring two goals late in the game.

The Spurs midfielder had struggled with his club form ever since failing in his bid to get a transfer during the summer.

The number 10 tore Ireland apart when the two sides last met for a crunch match in the Aviva Stadium.

On that occasion Eriksen waltzed through the Irish midfield scoring a hat trick to stop Ireland's 2018 World Cup dream at the play-off stage.

Hoffenheim's 23-year-old midfielder Robert Skov also got two goals against Gibraltar before later providing an assist for Eriksen's first goal.

Lech Posnan forward Christian Gytkjaer and Spanish club Legane's Martin Braithwaite got the other goals on the night.

Elsewhere in Group D, Switzerland all but assured their automatic qualification with a 1-0 win at home to Georgia. Switzerland now travel to Gibraltar on Monday with a win guaranteeing their place in next summer's competition.
