Aidan O'Shea: The Mark "will actually take bigger players out of the game"

Mayo star Aidan O'Shea believes the introduction of the mark to Gaelic football will "take bigger players out of the game".

The new rule was passed by Congress last month and sees a player claim a ball in the air on or past the 45 metre line and then decide to either play on or call a mark.

Speaking at the launch of The Tougest Trade, the Irish Times report his concerns about the new addition to Gaelic football.

"My opposition would be I think it’s unfair to make decision on the game in isolation. It might be a good idea, but where has anybody said, what’s the result of the mark? What could happen? What’s going to happen? Will it achieve what they want to first of all? I don’t think it will," he said.

"I think it will actually take bigger players out of the game. I think there will be fewer bigger players on the pitch because Stephen Cluxton will kick the ball short and if he wants to get a mark he’ll kick it to a speedy wing forward – standard size, maybe about six-one, max – who is going to run into space and catch the ball. That’s not the idea."
