Does one telling stat show Munster hurling champions are being shafted by current structure?

Last week on Off The Ball, Kilkenny star Richie Hogan spoke honestly about his frustration with the current format of the All-Ireland hurling championship, which leaves elite players waiting weeks on end for competitive games.

While Kilkenny seem to win championships often without the long breaks hampering them, it appears to have some effect on the Munster champions.

With Tipperary losing to Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final on Sunday, it was the fourth time in a row that the Munster champion had fallen at that hurdle after a five-week break since their provincial decider.

Kieran Shannon of the Examiner joined us on Off The Ball tonight to discuss the issue in detail.

"We now have a situation where of the last 13 teams to win the Munster championship and be asked to play five weeks later in their semi-final, there's been nine defeats, two draws and two wins," he said.

Shannon also touched on the place of the national league, making the point that it is "conflicting at the moment and it could free up the calendar" if it were to be taken out of the equation.
