Colm Keys outlines how Tom Ryan became the GAA's Director General

Colm Keys and Michael Moynihan joined Thursday's Off the Ball to discuss the appointment of Tom Ryan as the new Director General of the GAA.

Keys believes it was his shrewd handling of the association's finances during a difficult period for the country that saw him succeed Pairaic Duffy.

"I suspect over the last 10 years he has proved himself as a very steady hand in regard to the running of the association's financial affairs," he told Nathan.

"You must remember when he came in in 2007, within two years, the recession was upon this country. The GAA's financial buoyancy was quite prevalent and has grown from strength to strength so as a member of the Croke Park Secretariat - he clearly impressed people over those years.

"Notwithstanding Liam Sheedy in Sports Council's circles is very highly regarded as a member of the GAA's management for the past three years. He has built up quite a bit of respect and admiration in those circles too and of course, transformed Tipperary at the end of the last decade.

"And, Liam O'Neill's stewardship, his last three years as GAA President worked out well. He got a lot of things done so, what I think probably Tom's work over the last 11 years was very evident to those inside Croke Park and they probably saw him as a very safe pair of hands.

That might not suit everybody - those who are looking for a more radical approach but I think the work that's been done in his period of time as Director of Finance is likely to continue now," he added.
