Conor Cooney: "It was one of those days where the ball just hopped my way"

Galway cantered to a nine point victory over Wexford to win the Leinster Hurling Championship on Sunday.

Conor Cooney starred for the Tribesmen scoring eight points as they overcame the challenge of Davy Fitzgerald's men by 0-29 to 1-17.

Cooney joined Monday's Off the Ball to discuss his display and speaking to Joe Molloy he said: "It was one of those days where the ball just hopped my way. I knocked up a few scores and we did the business.

"We identified that they would be maybe a bit vulnerable with the high ball going in. We sort of set up that way and said we'd try it for the first few minutes and it seemed to work so we just stayed with it.

"We seemed to have the better of them in the air so we kept going with it. Balls broke our way and luckily enough, lads were winning primary possession as well.

"Joe (Canning) was outstanding, Niall Burke was snapping ball up from everywhere - there was a lot of lads winning primary possession.

"When you're winning primary possession, you're on the front foot straight away so it worked out well and went to plan," he added.

Galway are many people's favourites for this year's All-Ireland but Cooney insists they're only focused on the next match. "We are focused" he said, adding: "But we're not talking about going the whole way...we just want to go the most direct route possible and get to an All-Ireland semi-final and see where we go from there.

"That's what we are focused on now. We're taking every match as it comes. We're saying if we set our stall out right and do things right - we'll have the most direct route."

Cooney also talks about his injury struggles as well as the torrid time he endured during the 2012 All-Ireland final against Kilkenny.
