Cork's Paudie Murray: "The last three weeks we kept our head down. We were written off by a lot of people"

Cork beat Kilkenny to claim the 2017 All-Ireland Camogie title after a tense affair at Croke Park on Sunday.

A late point from Julia White gave the Rebelettes a 0-10 to 0-9 win and speaking to Off the Ball's Oisin Langan after the match, Murray said: "I'm delighted really and we've been focused all year for this and the last three weeks we kept our head down. We were written off by a lot of people.

"I think someone said the other day we stumbled into an All-Ireland final - obviously that person didn't see us play during the group stages because I thought we played the best camogie this year and we would have been disappointed if we didn't come away with a win.

"You've got to pay credit to Kilkenny - an outstanding team, I've said it all year that they are the best team and I think it's great for camogie that rivalry - it's brilliant.

"And, the level of interest that there was coming into the All-Ireland final was phenomenal and they've got to take credit for that.

"I think that last year the physicality got to us and we weren't ready for it whereas we were ready for it this year.

"But I think we played them in the league and some people said that they deserved to win it but I think when we looked at the stats that time - we were on top in every department except the scoring and they scored two goals that day that should have been disallowed so we went away from the league final very confident that we were capable of rattling them," he added.

Cork stalwart Gemma O'Connor was doubtful to play leading up to the match and the Cork manager said: "Look, medical advice was that there was no way, it was a 12 week, look anybody who knows Gemma knew she always had a chance and she trained Thursday night and the reaction Friday morning was quite good so we just took a chance there."

Asked whether it was a particularly sweet victory, he said: Yeah, I suppose it was. We had to work very, very hard. I don't think we got respect for the last two that we won. You know, there was talk of just one team coming in to this and one manager so maybe it suited us."
