Daithi Regan: Why Waterford aren't going to win an All-Ireland final

Daithi Regan reckons Waterford do not have all the tools to have a realistic chance of winning the Liam McCarthy Cup come September.

The Deise take on Dublin in today's All-Ireland quarter-final which is live on Off The Ball and explaining why he thinks Waterford are not realistic contenders, former Offaly star, Daithi, says: "Waterford aren't going to win an All-Ireland final. To win an All-Ireland final, you need a great forward line. Waterford do not have a great forward line."

While Daithi says Waterford "have a great system that suits them" and that Derek McGrath has impressed as manager, he feels "they won't win an All-Ireland final without a great forward line [which] Waterford do not have".

He also had strong words about the direction the game of hurling is headed.

"Looking at Dublin and Limerick the last day, the basics were letting them down. You can run the triangles [but] I honestly think there's too many cones on the field nowadays during training.

"And I'll say this: people say it's not good for hurling, Tipp and Kilkenny in All-Irelands every year. You know what? As far as I'm concerned, bring it on every year because to go and watch them play in an All-Ireland final, they play a brand of hurling that I personally like. I love when they go to war and the skills employed under the greatest of pressure and it's fantastic. And to be honest with you, I hope the two of them are in it this year because it's brilliant to look at."

Daithi was speaking on Off The Ball. Dublin v Waterford is our live match today. Listen to Daithi and Jamesie O'Connor's full preview via the podcast:
