"Imagine if we’d won - what the crowd would be like," Dan Shanahan told Off The Ball, reflecting on the number of supporters who showed up to welcome Waterford's squad home after the All Ireland final.
He added that the loss hit him harder as a selector than defeat as a player did in 2008:
"I personally took it very hard," he said, adding that the three weeks after the match were the toughest of his hurling career.
As part of the backroom team, he said that a loss like that leaves you wondering if there was anything you could have done differently on the big day.
He told Nathan Murphy that there is a "50/50" chance that the current management team will continue. Dan believes that to do so the team and the county board will have to work together to win the Liam McCarthy cup:
"We met, the management, a few weeks ago, we were all 50/50. A lot of that will have to do with different things with the County Board to be honest with you ... There’s no point in going forward if we’re not all together and I’m not saying we’re not."
Meanwhile, his thoughts have turned to his club duties.
Dan will hope to add to the eight goals that he was already scored in the Waterford championship when Lismore take on a Ballygunner team chasing a fourth county championship in a row in their semi-final on Sunday evening.
