Dan Shanahan: "We're going back to Croke Park"

Waterford secured local bragging rights after an eventful win over local rivals Wexford on Sunday.

A sun-soaked Pairc Ui Chaoimh witnessed an end-to-end affair as the pair battled for a place in the All-Ireland semi-final.

In the end, Waterford ran out winners by 1-23 to 1-19 and speaking to Off the Ball's Oisin Langan afterwards, Waterford selector Dan Shanahan said: "It was a tough game to be honest with you. Conditions were hot out there.

"The lads put in a massive effort all year and we got the result in the end so that's what we came up to do and we got it and we're going back to Croke Park."

Waterford took the game to Wexford from the off and brought the same physicality to the match as they did against Kilkenny in the previous round. "It's always a tough question to ask after beating a tough team like Kilkenny," said Shanahan, adding: "Can you do it again? And maybe we'll say the same thing in the semi-final but can we do it again?

"So that's what you're there for, you're there to win games and to be All-Ireland champions, you have to win games.

"You have to beat the teams that are ahead of you and today we got the result so we did. That's what we came up to do. A fantastic premises and a fantastic Pairc Ui Chaoimh and credit to Cork County Board for that.

"Wexford had a great year and Davy's brought them along but today we had luck on our side."

Wexford flew out of the blocks in the second half as they tried to reel the Deise in but Shanahan was happy with how his side dealt with the onslaught. "A lot of teams are going to get 10 minutes and we soaked it up, we didn't concede any goals which is vital against teams like Wexford and we pushed on. Our substitutes came on and contributed unbelievably today...that's what the panel is about," he said.
