Cork want to be a tougher nut to crack, but have they got the players to do that?

After two rounds of action, the National Hurling League table does not make for good reading if you're a Cork fan.

The Rebels prop up the table with two defeats from two, made up of a Round 1 loss to Galway by six points followed up by the three point defeat to Waterford at the weekend.

Denis Walsh of The Sunday Times was on Off The Ball last night to assess Cork's early evolution under new manager Kieran Kingston and the one thing that jumps out is the county's focus on trying to tighten up defensively.

"Cork need to be harder to break down. They were porous against Galway in Thurles last July, they've conceded a lot of goals in big games over the last three or four years and not conceding goals now is very high on their agenda and they didn't concede a goal chance to Waterford, which was a positive in a performance that wasn't very good," he said.

But Walsh feels Cork also seem to be lacking players carrying a good deal of confidence at the moment, and that consistency has been lost since their All-Ireland final appearance in 2013.

But ex-Clare star Jamesie O'Connor, who also joined us on the show, has doubts about Cork's ability to implement the new style.

"I just don't see if Cork have the players to play that style and certainly it comes at a price in terms of the lack of scoring threat at the other end of the field," he said.
