Derek McGrath: "General perception would be that we've lost our chance" but Waterford are confident

Waterford manager Derek McGrath has emphasised the confidence of his players after their draw against Kilkenny in the All-Ireland hurling semi-final.

Both sides must do it all again and while he admits that some critics will expect Kilkenny to defeat the Deise in the replay, McGrath is heartened by his players' post-match reaction after coming so close to winning at the first time of asking.

"Initially a little bit disappointed based on not being able to close the game but very proud of the lads' efforts and absolute diligence they showed all the way through the game and hunted in packs for the period of the game. But listen, I don't believe in hiding emotions too much," he told Newstalk's Oisin Langan.

"When we got into the dressing room there was a great reaction from the players in terms of the confidence that can be gained from the performance and the general perception would be that 'we've lost our chance, that Kilkenny don't lose replays' and in many ways it will be under the radar again for whenever the replay is."

He also explained that the approach which nearly toppled Kilkenny today was "a year in the planning".

"It's a brilliant situation to be in looking forward to another match next week or two weeks time," he added.
