Derek McGrath: “There was a little bit of naivety from us and the players"

Waterford manager Derek McGrath believes naivety cost his side dearly against Limerick in their Munster SHC defeat to Limerick.

The Treaty men secured their first championship victory over the Deise since 2007 as they eased past their opponents by 2-26 to 1-16 at the Gaelic Grounds.

And McGrath, speaking to Oisin Langan, could not hide his frustration with his players after the heavy defeat.

“I felt emotionally and psychologically that we were in a relatively good place,” McGrath said.

“We felt we parked the incident that everyone was talking about last week relatively well. We had a good week of training and had the captain coming back into the team so [we] had a bit of continuity there.

“I’d probably be madder with our continuity of approach in terms of being a little naive. In the analysis last week we went man-for-man and it crept in to such an extent that we followed Limerick all over the pitch.

“There was a little bit of naivety from us and the players but we’ll learn from that.”

McGrath also addressed concerns that his team could expect to come under serious scrutiny following their winless record in the championship.

“I don’t mind that. It can be what it wants to be,” McGrath added.

“I think the decent and genuine supporters that came today know the significance of what the lads have gone through over the last couple of months.

“And over the last four years they’ve gone out and given us everything they’ve gone out and that’s what they’ve done. It doesn’t look like it when you are blown away like we were today.”
