Fermanagh punish a poor Westmeath side

Fermanagh 1-13
Westmeath 0-7

Fermanagh have reached their first All-Ireland quarter-final in over a decade with a nine-point win over Westmeath.

2004 was the last time Fermanagh went this far and was the same year Westmeath went on to provincial glory in Leinster, a feat they couldn't replicate last time round against Dublin.

But Westmeath started the stronger of the two sides, capitalising on the indiscipline of Fermanagh to build up a 0-5 to 0-2 lead in the opening half hour.

Things were not going well for Fermanagh and they didn't exactly help themselves when Marty O'Brien was given a black card for hauling Kieran Martin to the ground in an off the ball incident.

Ryan McCluskey also was shown a black card and it looked as if it was going to be a long afternoon for the Ulster side.

Fermanagh reeled in the deficit, however, and the sides when in at the break level at five points apiece.

The interval allowed the Lake county to regroup and they were far the better side after the break, pulling away with star performer Tomas Corrigan stepping up.

His goal 15 minutes from time put Fermanagh nine points clear and took his personal tally to 1-7.

There was no cohesion in the Westmeath attack in the second half, with aimless high balls lofted into the Fermanagh square and loose passes were frequent in the final third.

A deserved result and Fermanagh will now be rewarded with a quarter final showdown with either Dublin or Kerry depending on today's later throw-in where Cork take on Kildare in Thurles.
