"I sh*t myself" - Daithi Regan dredges up his 1994 All Ireland final memories

"Thankfully we won".

The 1994 All Ireland final went the way of Offaly but from a personal perspective, Daithi Regan didn't enjoy the best of the days at Croke Park against Limerick in the 3-16 to 2-13 thriller.

The former Offaly star was part of an all-star opening panel on our Off The Ball Roadshow at the Radisson Blu in Galway alongside ex-Waterford stalwart Ken McGrath, former Galway corner back Ollie Canning and nine-time All Ireland-winning former Kilkenny half back Tommy Walsh.

"The difficult I found was that I tortured myself for years afterwards as to why it happened, why on the biggest day of all, the day that you've waited for all your life, why did it go the way it did to the extent that the morning of the game, I genuinely had an absolute breakdown. I was in the house on my own and it was horrific," said Regan of what he saw as his disappointing 1994 final in which he was taken off with 20 minutes to go.

"I remember doing sit ups every night and I had a photograph of Mike Houlihan, so coming up you'd be looking at his face and you'd be sore and you'd be driving yourself on. So then on the big day, when you did meet the challenge, I sh*t myself and I had a bad day. I came down very hard on myself. I felt I'd let myself down. These things can get to players. It's an All Ireland final day."

On All Ireland final day, he added that,"My brother rang me from Dublin to wish me luck and I sat in the hallway and I bawled my eyes out."

Regan once told Joe Molloy about the following year's final when he meted out the treatment he had received in 1994 on a Clare opponent:
