"It was nothing intentional, I went for the ball" - Philly McMahon on Kieran Donaghy incident

Dublin defender Philly McMahon has dismissed claims he eye-gouged Kerry's Kieran Donaghy in the final stages of his side's All-Ireland win yesterday, describing the incident as "nothing intentional".

Speaking on The Pat Kenny Show this morning, McMahon stated: "When you're trying to reach around Kieran Donaghy, you're trying to reach around him. It was nothing intentional."

"The referee said he didn't see anything. He could have pulled up a lot of incidents yesterday but unfortunately it was  my one that was pulled up," he added.

Critics of the player's actions, including All-Ireland winner with Kerry Mike Quirke, labelled the incident a "disgrace".

When asked whether he shook hands with his opponent, McMahon said he couldn't remember but that "this is the great thing about GAA we go to battle on the pitch but we shake hands after."
