James Horan's verdict on the decision to put Aidan O'Shea on Kieran Donaghy

The debate regarding the benefits of putting Aidan O'Shea at full back on Kieran Donaghy has elicited a wide range of opinions since Mayo and Kerry drew in an All Ireland semi final thriller.

Former Mayo manager James Horan and ex-Kerry footballer Mike Quirke joined us on Off The Ball to analyse Mayo boss Stephen Rochford's decision to redeploy O'Shea.

"It's a very brave move that Stephen went with, him and his management team," said Horan.

"It was a very courageous thing that he did. I don't think it worked during the game. I did think Kieran had a very big influence in how Kerry got a draw. He got on a lot of ball.

"It's a real interesting one for Stephen now. Do you go with that again? Aidan O'Shea and the management team could have worked on it during the week and figured it out a little bit better and maybe he can get tighter or stay with Kieran or whatever it is. So maybe it's worked from that point of view. 'It didn't work the first time but we can make it better'".

Horan praised O'Shea's match intelligence and his ability to analyse the game, adding that the Mayo man will learn from the first experience.

"If it was to happen again, I think Aidan O'Shea would do better on Kieran Donaghy. That's when you make the decision to put Aidan in there. I still think I would love to see Aidan O'Shea in the middle of the field, driving forward. Mayo scored one point from a free," he said.

"I think if Aidan O'Shea was out there driving like he was, we would have won a lot more frees, running at Tadhg Morley, running down the centre of defence and maybe keeping tabs on David Moran as well. So I think there's more to gain there from a personal perspective than the neutralising that Aidan was trying to do on Kieran Donaghy."

Horan also suggested other players who could be used to neutralise Donaghy including Donal Vaughan as well as not just concentrating on counter-acting Donaghy's high catches but what happens in the next immediate phase of play.
