James McCarthy looks set to escape further punishment after Donegal clash

James McCarthy looks set to escape any further action after clashing with Donegal's Martin McElhinney on Saturday night.

The game saw two red cards handed out by referee Conor Lane, one to McCarthy himself and another to Donegal's Michael Murphy, but the big talking point was the suggestion of an attempted eye-gouging on the part of the Dublin player.

Manager Jim Gavin took exception to that line of questioning after the game, in which he stated that it was a "strong allegation" to make.

A report in The Irish Independent on Tuesday suggests that the GAA's Central Competitions Control Committee is likely to take a similar line on the topic and will not take any further action on the incident.

The report states that the CCCC looks set to judge that "the Ballymun man hasn't a sufficient case of dangerous behaviour to an opponent to answer", given that the contact with McElhinny was not prolonged.
