Jason Sherlock: I had to confront challenges I highlight in the book that I never really thought about

Dublin legend Jason Sherlock joined Tuesday's Off the Ball to talk about his new book "Jayo".

Asked why he decided to write a book about his life, he told Joe Molloy: "It was probably a couple of years ago, I did a course, an MBA, which was a business course but one of the modules was 'organisational behaviour' and one of the assignments was 'In 3,000 words, write about your life' and that was a really key learning for me - to actually have to confront challenges I highlight in the book that I never really thought about.

"So, once I did that process - it really gave me the appetite to say 'well one, I'd like to know more about myself and two, I thought I could add value to people could identify with some of the challenges that I had growing up', through my sporting career, post my sporting career and then I suppose some of the philosophies I have know as a coach so that was the inspiration."

"I got the opportunity to do the MBA through the GPA scholarships and at that stage I was kind of a couple of years finished playing - kind of questioning what value you have and through a conversation with Dessie and Siobhan Early at the GPA, they put me in touch with DCU and again, I'd worked in sales, probably just to complement playing sport, particularly GAA - never really thought any further, never really thought about what other opportunities could be out there for me.

"So, as much as it is a snapshot across business, the one module that I could really kind of identify with was that 'organisational behaviour' so yeah, there was a lot of hardship in it, it is a tough thing but to have the confidence to be able to go through a process like that and do it and then the other learning for me was the amount of traits you could take from elite sport and put them into a business world," he added.
