Jason Sherlock: "When I finished playing - all I could see was failure"

Former Dublin footballer Jason Sherlock dropped by the Off the Ball studio during the week to look back at his career.

Despite winning the All-Ireland in 1995, Sherlock believes he should have won the game's top prize again and viewed his career as a failure for quite some time after he retired.

"At the time, as a player, you judge yourself on success or failure and because after ‘95 I hadn’t done myself justice," he told Joe Molloy. "I hadn’t done Dublin justice where we were a losing team - I really kind of looked at it then and said ‘hold on, you’re not going to be playing sport all your life, this is what you dreamed of doing, you have to get back there, you have to give yourself the best chance to win again’.

"Again, I would have identified with the likes of Roy Keane, your Ronon O’Gara’s, the Tony McCoy’s - these guys who had the drive and desire to create the standards. They mightn’t have been the most talented players but they got the most out of themselves.

"So, I kind of took that mantle on in my own head and I was obsessive about it - there’s no question.

"And when I finished playing, it didn’t finish in good circumstances for me - all I could see was failure. I judge myself on what I won and what I lost. It wasn’t until the last few years where I see a lot more positives to go through that time - the resilience that I showed, the character it took to keep going back year after year, trying to apply yourself."
