Jim Gavin: "It's our first step on a journey in 2017"

All-Ireland champions Dublin got their 2017 Championship campaign off to a winning start with a 12 point win over a game Carlow side on Saturday.

Speaking to Off the Ball's Dave McIntyre after the match, Dublin boss Gim Gavin was delighted to get the campaign underway with a victory

"We're just happy to come away tonight with a win in the opening round of the Championship," he said, adding: "It's our first step on a journey in 2017, I'm not sure where it will take us but we're just glad to get out of the blocks.

"Carlow are a very well-drilled side and they showed great effort there today, probably the way we thought they would but of the 14 outfield players, they probably had at least 13 behind the ball on most occasions.

"I thought we controlled it quite well first half, we were comfortable but probably missed as much as we scored and that obviously needs to be improved for future outings.

"In the second half again, I thought we looked very much in control and we're just happy to come away with the win."

Dublin move on to play the winner of the Offaly/Westmeath match in the Leinster Football semi-final.
